Mersey Docks and Harbour Board

On page 80 of Graham Bartram's book, British Flags and Emblems, the flag of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company Ensign is depicted. Despite the fact that the Company underwent a name shuffle from "Mersey Docks and Harbour Board" to its present title, the lettering on the fly of the British blue ensign remained unaltered, this being MHDB. The wreath was changed though and (in my humble opinion) improved graphically. The whole defacement is most certainly in white, and not gold as some authorities have stated. The red ensign variant is now, presumably, defunct.

These images are based on the 1992 re-print of the Flaggenbuch (1939). Bruce Berry recently purchased an original MDHB red ensign and we can both confirm that Flaggenbuch has the illustration spot-on.

On the Port Cities web site (search for "Flag") are also many proposals for a Mersey Docks and Harbour Board house flag. The flag is from the Merseyside Maritime Museum. This flag is the only reported as "Flag of..." as opposed to "Suggested design..."

Lloyd's Book of House Flags and Funnels (1912) shows the same (red) flag (#1393, p. 103), "for dredgers".
