The flag consists of the arms in gold on a red over white field. The club colours are actually red and white, with black as an extra colour to
distinguish United from all the other clubs that wear red and white. The
official club flag (or the 1998 version at least) can be seen at

where it is simply red with 'Manchester' in white, over white, with 'United' in
red.

In today's Telegraph are two images from the funeral of George Best, former
Manchester United player. The coffin is draped in the team flag - red over
white, with MANCHESTER written in white on the red stripe and UNITED written in
red on the white stripe. See

At Manchester United's official website and others, it appears that the flag
Ron located was entirely convincing, since the 'coat of
arms'/badge/'crest'/whatever you want to call it figures prominently and
consistently on the websites and souvenir sales items. There are few, if any,
'official' football club flags. It may be worth noting, however, that the flag
covering the coffin of Man. U.'s most famous player is hardly likely to be
unapproved.
