The municipality of Tremblay-les-Villages (2,281 inhabitants in 2014, 6,331 ha), is located 30 km northwest of Chartres.
The municipality was created in 1972 as the merger of the six former municipalities of
Chêne-Chenu (209 inh. in 1968), Écublé (305 inh.), Gironville-et-Neuville (82 inh.), Saint-Cheron-des-Champs (63 inh.),
Theuvy-Achères (117 inh.) and Tremblay-le-Vicomte (437 inh.). The merger was proposed by the Mayor of Tremblay-le-Vicomte (elected in 1971 and subsequent Mayor of Tremblay-les-Villages until 2001), Martial Taugourdeau (1926-2001; Senator from 1986 to 2001, Representative from 1978 to 1981 and 1986 to 1989, and President of the General Council of Eure-et-Loir from 1986 to 2001; obituary).

The flag of Tremblay-les-Villages, sometimes hoisted in front of the Town Hall, is white with the municipal arms - indeed the arms of Tremblay-le-Vicomte, "Gules a bend argent surrounded in orle by six merlettes of the same" - with an inscription handwritten in a medieval style above the shield, saying "le vicomte de Tremblai".
In his monography on the feudal domain of Tremblay, F. Faupin gives the arms of the Viscounts of Tremblay as "Gules a bend sinister or cantonned by six merlettes of the same in orle" and provides an historical record of the castle, today ruined.
The castle was probably erected around 1070 by King of France Philip I
in a strategic site watching the road connecting Chartres and Dreux,
and soon destroyed by Henry I of England. Rebuilt, the castle was
severely damaged in 1169 by Henry II Plantegenet, as a retaliation
after the destruction of the castle of Chennebrun (Normandy), and again, in 1212, by John Lackland.
Henry VI confiscated the Viscounty of Tremblay in 1423. Most of the
today's ruins must date back to rebuilding performed at that time. In
1562, the castle was damaged by Admiral de Coligny during the battle
of Dreux. This did not prevent the castle to be used until 1592, when
the garrison of Verneui-sur-Avre eventually burned it down. Abandoned
and subsequently used as a stone quarry, the ruins were acquired in
1870 by the Bouchard family.
