Presentation of Vouziers

The municipality of Vouziers (4,339 inhabitants in 2018; 5,924 ha) is located 60 km south of Charleville-Mézières. The municipality was established on 1 June 2016 as the merger of the former municipalities of Vouziers, Vrizy and Terron-sur-Aisne.

On 24 March 1885, Paul Verlaine was tried, sentenced in court, and imprisoned from mid-April to mid-May in Vouziers, following a complaint filed by his own mother.
During much of the First World War, Vouziers was one of the important towns behind the front line. Tens of thousands of German soldiers came to rest there, and sometimes died in hospital. The town suffered a lot of damage and destruction, particularly during the victorious counter-attack led in October 1918 by General Gouraud's army and the violent fighting that ensued. The aviator Roland Garros, shot down during an air battle over the neighboring village of Saint-Morel, was buried in the cemetery of Vouziers. The Czechoslovak Legions of future 1st President Tomáš Masaryk took part to this fighting.

The flag of Vouziers, as used in 2013 (photo), is vertically divided red-yellow. These are the colors of the municipal arms, "Gules a garb surrounded by eight mullets or".
