Presentation of Villayerno Morquillas

The municipality of Villayerno Morquillas (226 inhabitants in 2010; 917 ha; municipal website) is located in the center of the Province of Burgos, 10 km of Burgos.

Villayerno and Morquillas appeared in the 10th century, during the resettlement of the surroundings of the town of Burgos, founded in 884; however, the first written sources on the two villages date back only to the 12th century.
The etymology of Villayerno is disputed; oldest written forms, such as Liviermo and Libierno, seem to indicate that the anthroponym "Libierno" could have been associated with the name of the resettler Guimario. Morquillas, originally located one km south of today's Villayerno was named for stone heaps locally known as morcueros, morcueras or morcos.
