The city arms were known by many city and court seals since 1292, but also by the fountain of the market square of the city and by a local bell from 1636. They basically never changed. Gate and tower are stressing the status of a city. The inescutcheon displays the family arms of the Counts of Sayn, who granted city rights in 1314. The inescutcheon was omitted between 1816 and 1889. The tinctures had been chosen in 1907 and were confirmed in 1938. Otto Hupp displayed the city arms on a silver shield with red buildings and blue spires.
