On the peaks of a triplemount issuant Vert three firs of the same, chief quartered of Argent and Sable.
Meaning:
The village was first mentioned in 1316. In 1412 the Burgraves of Nürnberg acquired the local estate. They are represented by the quartered chief. The firs are considered to be canting. The triplemount is symbolising the location on the edge of the Fichtelgebirge. Schönwald gained the rank of a market town before 1914 and the rank of a city on 17 May 1954.

The arms were approved on 12 February 1938 by governor of Bayreuth Shire (German: Gau). The banner was approved on 17 May 1954 by Minister of Interior of Bayern.
