Shield Argent, a castle Gules with five embattled towers, having cone roofs Azure, topped by bullets Or; beneath the central tower a port Sable with half open portcullis Gules; on top of the tower a red over white pennant.
Meaning:
Similar arms had been already mentioned in the correspondence of the local council and the Prussian State Archive in Magdeburg in 1927. That pattern had been based already on a city seal from 1491 with circumscription "SIGILLUM CIVITATIS SMEDEBERGENSIS". Later the number of towers was reduced to three. The city was first mentioned in 1350 as "Smedeberg". It had been burned by the Hussites in 1429. As a result of the destructions the city was fortified by a wall with two gates. The number of towers in the arms is probably referring to the four towers of the local parish church and the turret of the city hall, which was completed in 1570. Also a copper plate engraving of Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593 - 1650) displayed five towers overlooking the city walls. The colours of the pennant are those of the Bishopric of Magdeburg.
