Shield Argent, a knight caboshed/guardant (?) in blue armour, the helmet crested with peacock feathers proper, a lance with pennant Argent in his left hand and a sword Azure in pale, hilted Or and superimposed by a shield Argent in his right hand; shield and lance pennant are charged with a griffin rampant Gules.
Meaning:
A Slavic castle existed at least since 1236. The nearby settlement gained city rights in 1249. Gartz became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1304 and shipping and trade had been the main business lines. The city declined in the 17th century and the inhabitants survived by cultivating own parcels of soil. Gartz became a dominion of Brandenburg in 1648, of Sweden in 1679 and of Prussia in 1720. Similar arms, displaying the Duke of Pomerania, recognisable by the crest of his helmet, already existed since the 14 century. The shield then displayed a red fleur-de-lis. It was replaced by a griffin in 1576. In 1992 the tincture of the armour was changed from grey steel to blue, and of the background from golden (yellow) to silver (white).
