Description of flag:
The ratio is 3:5. It is a plain, blue flag. The figures of the coat of arms without shield are slightly shifted to the hoist.

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue field is a golden (= yellow) tower having two levels. Both levels are embattled. The lower level is masoned black and has an open gate. The upper level has three blue windows, the central window is shaped like a quatrefoil. Above the tower is a red inescutcheon displaying a silver (= white) nettle leaf.
Meaning:
The current coat of arms is based upon a seal of the village of Aldenburg. Count Adolf IV of Holstein granted city rights to Aldenburg in 1235. The tower is probably a canting element, symbolizing the old castle (German: alte Burg). The inescutcheon is symbolizing the counts of Holstein, the former rulers.

The flag was approved on 22 April 1981. The coat of arms was confirmed on 5 August 1936.
