Hildburghausen Coat of Arms

Shield quartered, 1st and 4th quarter Azure a lion rampant barry of eight of Gules and Argent, 2nd and 3rd quarter Or a lion rampant Sable armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
Hildburghausen was founded as a village of Franconian settlers before 900. It was donated by the Counts of Henneberg in 1234 to the Bishopric of Würzburg. Meanwhile being a market town it was regained by the counts in 1316. It was acquired by the Burgraves of Nürnberg in 1353 and by the Margraves of Meißen in 1374. It belonged to Sachsen-Coburg since 1572 and to Sachsen-Altenburg since 1640. In 1680 it became the capital of the newly formed Duchy of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The duchy became a part of Sachsen-Meiningen, to which it belonged until 1918. Hildburghausen had proper arms already in times of the rule of Count Berthold VII of Henneberg-Schleusingen in 1324. They displayed a wall with two towers and a hen, the heraldic animal of the counts, between the towers. His greatgranddaughter Margaretha married Balthasar Landgrave of Thüringen and Margrave of Meißen in 1374 and Hildburghausen was part of her endowment. The new arms represented the new land tenure and displayed since then the black lion of the margraviate and the barry lion of the landgraviate.
