Meaning:
The arms display the local bridge, which played an important role in the development of the town. The bridge was built in 1711 and became important for the traffic from Hamburg southwards. It was a toll-bridge, for each horse and cart a Kreuzer ( a small coin) had to be paid. The bridge was such a success that, already in 1789, the wooden bridge was replaced by a stone bridge, which is seen on the arms. In 1956 the arms were displayed as below. These arms are derived from the oldest seal of the village, dating from the late 16th century. Those arms displayed a linden tree and a bench, symbols for the local court.
The arms were approved on 3 March 1967.
