The coat of arms was adopted by the local council on 16 April 1910. It appeared already on seals since 1592. It was approved by Oberpräsident of Prussian province of Westphalia on 3 August 1938. Flag and banner finally were approved by minister of interior of Northrhine-Westphalia on 18 October 1950. Just before the local council decided to introduce a "Fahne" and a "Heiss-Flagge". According to §2(2) of Hauptsatzung of the city of Schwelm, version 28 June 1996 the flag with coat of arms and both variants of the banner are mentioned.
