Shield Argent a lion rampant Sable, crowned and tongued Gules, holding an eradicated tree Vert by his forepaws, upon his breast an inescutcheon lozengy of Argent and Azure in bend.
Meaning:
Gundelfingen had been a city before 1280. The first city seal, probably made around 1300, displayed the Bavarian lion above and the tree below. The tree perhaps should be canting, being a maple (German also Gundreba). Since 1386 the lion stands in front of the tree. In 1462 Duke Ludwig of Bayern-Landshut granted the additional lozengy inescutcheon. Coloured paintings existed since the 16th century. Especially the literature of the 19th century depicted the arms full of errors, among those the tree was replaced by a fir, and the tinctures changed. But also in the 16th century the lion had been red without crown. The current pattern is based on the version from 1462.
