The shield is Argent with base Vert, charged by the scull Argent of a heather sheep (German: Heidschnucke), issuant from base an oak tree Vert with acorns Or.
Meaning:
Bergen was first mentioned in 1197. The status of a market town was however denied by literature. Bergen belong to Welfish core dominions and was part of the Duchy of Lüneburg since 1267. In the 20th century the town developed and due to economic uprise it gained the rank of a city in 1957, when also the coat of arms was approved. It had had no prototypes in seals before. The oak is representing the 1000 years old oak in the city. Scull and green colour are alluding to the location in Southern Lüneburg Heather. The flag was approved in 1964.
