Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue field is a silver (=white) embattled circle wall having four embattled towers. In the circle is a golden (= yellow) inescutcheon showing a black, rampant lion, armed and tongued red.
Meaning:
According to source the coat ofarms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which dates from the early 14th century, probably before the city rights were granted. The inescutcheon is alluding to the Counts/Dukes, of Jülich, who owned the city for a long time and granted the city rights in 1317. The circle wall is symbolizing the city rights. Bergheim was residence of the counts until approx 1312.
