Description of coat of arms:
It is a silver shield. Upon the base is a green hill with two trees in natural colour, which here means mainly green with black. Between the trees is a red shield containing a silver
Gothic capital “A”.
Meaning:
It is an image of the so called “Upstalsboom”, which is a tree located at the place, where a “thing” is held. The shield was used to mark the place as a “thing” (pronounced: ting) and the trees in this case obviously had been used to fix the shield. At this place the Eastern Frisian chieftains met for discussion and decision about local affairs. In the end the place was used as a mixture between parliament and court of justice.
Note: According to Aurich’s Hauptsatzung and to Stefan Schwoon's database the letter “A” should be golden, not silver. An evidence can e.g. be
found at this website.
