Terezín city flag

[Terezín flag] by Blas Delgado Ortiz, 17 Mar 2003, after image by Petr Exner; flag adopted 5 Apr 2001

Better known as Theresienstadt. City and fort were founded in 1780 by Emperor Joseph II, and named after his mother, Maria Theresia (hence MT on the flag). Nearly from the beginning the fort was used as a prison. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Germany in 1939 Terezin was turned into a ghetto, and one of the most terrible concentration camps,
Theresienstadt, was erected in the "Old Fortress". The National Cemetery of Terezín with its white cross bears eloquent testimony to the crimes that were committed here.
