The symbols of Esparza were designed in the early 1990s by Claudia Quirós Vargas and Marco Fco. Rojas Ramírez, aka Marco Fco. Soto Ramírez. Claudia Quirós Vargas, awarded in 1991 the First National History Prize "Aquileo J. Echeverría and proclaimed on 31 August 2001 "Preferred Daughter of Canton Esparza", made the historical research required to design the flag.
Marco Fco. Soto Ramírez, a folklorist, designer of the character "Ñor Antenor", proclaimed on 13 September 1989 "cultural typical Character of Canton Esparza", graphically designed the flag.
The flag was officially adopted by the Municipal Council, which approved a motion presented by the Association for the Restoration and Development of Canton Esparza.
The flag is horizontally divided green, symbolizing the natural environment, over blue, symbolizing the sea shore.  A triangle is placed along the hoist, with its point reaching the middle of the flag. The triangle is horizontally divided red, representing the merging of the native, African and Spanish blood; yellow, representing the old town of Espíritu Santo de Esparza, with its year of foundation, '1574', in black; and, white, symbolizing peace and fraternity.

The designer of the flag maintains an active blog, therefore it might be possible to contact him to get more information on the flag and on the photo reported by Jaume. >
