On 1 January 2009 the new commune of Val Müstair was formed through the merger of Fuldera, Lü, Müstair, Santa Maria Val Müstair, Tschierv and Valchava. The new commune is identical with the former Val Müstair circle and adopted its emblem.

The name of the commune comes from Latin cervus, deer, so the presence of the deer on the flag is canting.
