The flag is blazoned "Azure two representations of the mace of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in saltire Argent surmounted by the shield of the Armorial Bearings of the province of Nova Scotia ensigned by the Royal Crown proper".
The mace is the symbol of authority in the House of Assembly. The arrangement of white maces on a blue field alludes to the flag of Scotland, which is blue with a white X-shaped cross, on which the flag of Nova Scotia is based.
