The municipality of São Pedro da Serra (3,612 inhabitants; 3,538 ha) is
located 100 km north of Porto Alegre.
São Pedro da Serra was established
in 1878 by the German immigrant Pedro Lisenfeld and further settled by, as Linha
São Pedro, by second-generation colonists of German origin. The town developed
in the beginning of the 20th century after the building of the Montenegro-Bento
Gonçalves railway. The first masoned house in the town was erected in 1911 by
the merchant Júlio Selbach.

The format of the municipal coat
of arms of the municipality of São Pedro da Serra is based on Portuguese
heraldry, from which stems the heraldic principle adopted in Brazil, with a
symbolism artistically elaborated with mystic and allegoric rigor in shapes and
dimensions prescribed by usual heraldry; the colors technically obey the
following codification.
- Or (gold) symbolizes force and wealth;
- Azure
(blue) symbolizes beauty;
- Sable (black) symbolizes prudence;
- Argent
(silver) represents history and nobleness;
- Gules (red) represents justice
and honor;
- Vert represents the natural environment.
The coat of arms
features a rising sun, representing novelty, dawn and birth of a new
municipality. The region's topographical features are represented by purple
mountains, while the fields and furrows represent agriculture, as a tribute to
the early developers of the region. The Brazilian pines represent forests but
also timber extraction, recalling that the future of the municipality shall be
based on the present without forgetting the past.
The St. Peter church placed
in the shield's center irradiates the community's religious feeling. The lions
rampant represent the force and courage of the first immigrants, transmitted
from one generation to the next. St. Peter's keys featured on the escutcheon
represent the keys that connect the earth and the sky, uniting all the
inhabitants of the municipality in the same religious principle.
Cattle-breeding is represented by three animals placed beneath the lions, a
bovine, a hen and a pig.
The scroll represents protection. The supporters
represent fruit and crop production, maize, fig, peach, khaki and kiwi.
The
three-towered mural crown represents protection and the three powers, Executive,
Legislative and Judiciary, and a 3rd rank, as a town seat of a municipality.
