The municipality of Boa Vista do Cadeado (2,523 inhabitants in 2015; 70,053
ha) is located 400 km north-west of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed
of the districts of Boa Vista (seat), Cadeado, Faxinal, Ponte Queimada, Capela,
Formigueiro and Rincăo do Tigre.
The municipality of Boa Vista de Cadeado
was established by State Law No. 10,739 promulgated on 16 April 1996, separating
from Cruz Alta, Ijuí and Augusto Pestana, and inaugurated on 1 January 2001.

The coat of arms of Boa Vista do Cadeado is explained as follows:
1)
The crown recalls that Boa Vista do Cadeado was established in 1831 by the
Imperial government as the first district of one of the regions of Rio Grande do
Sul.
2) The padlock symbolizes the closure of the borders with the
neighboring countries by the Imperial government in 1831.
3) The arch over
the crown symbolizes the initiation of a cycle for a new era.
4) The southern
Cross represents the sky over Boa Vista.
5) The sun represents the advent of
a new century.
6) The yellow arrow pointing upwards is a symbol of progress.
7) The lock and the Three Rivers represent the abundance in freshwater.
8)
Wheat, maize and the tractor represent agriculture.
9) The bovine represents
cattle-breeding.
10) The grey color represents the stone foundations of the
Jesuit mission.
11) The green color represents the preservation of the
rainforest and the productive fields.
