The municipality of Água Santa (3,748 inhabitants; 29,180 ha) is located 300
km north-east of Porto Alegre.
Água Santa was established in the 1920s by
Italian colonists coming from Antonio Prado, Veranópolis, Garibaldi and other
neighboring towns. They named the place for the miraculous, "saint water" ("água
santa") gushing forth in a cave located 2 km from the downtown. Dedicated to Our
Lady of Lourdes, the cave is the site of a yearly farmers' pilgrimage unique in
Brazil.
