The municipality of União da Vitória (58,296 inhabitants in 2021; 72,002 ha)
is located on the border with Santa Catarina, here river Iguaçu,, 250 km
south-west of Curitiba. Together with Porto União, located across the border, it
forms a single urban nucleus known as Iguaçu Twins.
Porto União was
settled in 1842 after the discovery of Vau, a section of river Iguaçu with
shallow water, suitable for crossing by cattle, and also to embark and disembark
when navigating the river. Renamed to Porto União da Vitória in 1855, the town
was boosted after the establishment in 1880 of Colonel Amazonas Marcondes, a
salt trader from Palmas. The colonel initiated the next year steam navigation on
river Iguaçu, transporting cargoes and passengers.
The municipality of União
da Vitória was established by Decree No. 564 issued on 24 March 1890. The iron
bridge of the São Paulo-Rio Grande do Sul railway, spanning over the Iguaçu, was
inaugurated in 1907. In the aftermath of the Contestado War (1912-1916), União
da Vitória was split on 5 September 1917; the part of the town allocated to
Santa Catarina being renamed to Porto União.
