The municipality of Teixeira Soares (10,277 inhabitants in 2010; 90,279 ha) is
located 160 km west of Curitiba.
Teixieira Soares was established in
1890, as Boa Vista by João Augusto and João Bernardes, who sere joined in 1896
by Horácio Nunes and Joaquim Neves. Foreseeing the potential of the railway for
the development of the place, the four founders offered plots for the building
of a station on the São Paulo-Rio Grande do Sul line, which was inaugurated on 1
January 1900 and named for the famous engineer Teixeira Soares (1848-1927); so
was the settlement that developed nearby.
The district of Teixeira Soares was
established, as part of the municipality of Palmeira, on 22 October 1909, to be
elevated a municipality on 26 March 1917.

João
Teixeira Soares (1848-1927) gained international fame for the building of the
Paranaguá-Curitiba. Due to Paraná's topography, the project was deemed
impossible, especially for a young engineer then 34-years old. Emperor Pedro II
offered him as a reward a nobility title, which he refused as a republican; he
accepted, however, membership of the Rose Imperial Order, which winded up in
1891 with the fall of the empire. As a compensation, he was awarded the title of
Commander of the Order of the Crown of Belgium (the building of the Paraná
railway had been conceded to a Belgian company).
In 1884, Teixeira Soares
built the Corcovado railway in Rio de Janeiro, which was Brazil's first
electrified railroad and relied on Riggenbach's gear system.
Teixeira Soares
is credited the building of more than 10,000 km of railroads in the states of
Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Paraná, and São
Paulo. He also pushed industrialization of the country and the establishment of
credit banks for agriculture. With his associate Antonio Rossi, he set up in
1918 a service of air transport of mail and passengers between the country's
main towns, and introduced hydroplanes to Brazil.
Teixeira Soares was a very
close friend of the French politician Georges Clémenceau, Prime Minister from
1917-1920 and winner of the First World War, which considered him as "the best
man he ever met in his life".

The flag and arms of Teixeira Soares are
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 669 promulgated on 10 April 1987.
The
flag is diagonally divided yellow-green by a broad white stripe running from
upper hoist to loser fly, charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms.
The coat of arms, designed by Sebastião Ferrarini, is formed by a shield of
the Samnite type, horizontally divided by a white wavy stripe into two parts
arranged as follows.
The upper right quadrilateral features on a white field
a stretch of railway line, in black, symbolizing João Teixeira Soares, one of
the engineers who built the railroad that crosses the state of Paraná.
The
upper left quadrilateral features on a blue field a white Latin Cross, which
symbolizes the Christian spirit of Teixeira Soares' people.
The shield's main
field features on a yellow background and on a green base a pine tree, which
symbolizes the municipality's resources, represented by cultivation of wheat,
soybeans and corn, basic source of income for Teixeira Soares.
The pine
proper represents the Land of Araucaria, which is the natural vegetation of the
region.
The mural crown argent with eight towers, only five of them visible,
and red port and and windows symbolizes the municipal authority.
The shield
is supported right by a ripe wheat plant and left by a fructed soybean plant.
Underneath the shield, the red scroll bears the inscription "14 Julho - -
Teixeira Soares - 1917."
Yellow: is the image of maturity of judgment,
symbolizing nobleness, magnitude and wealth.
Blue is the color of the sky,
symbolizing justice, loyalty and beauty.
