The coat of arms of Piraquara, in
proportions 8 units in length on 12 units in width, consists of a shield formed
by entering and protruding curves, bordered by a yellow (or) outline of 1/2 unit
in width.
In the center of the shield, on a white background, a silver stone
monument represents stone extraction and handicraft, which were started by the
Portuguese and Spanish who settled in the place called Borda do Campo, at the
foot of the Serra do Mar.
The shield is surmounted by a mural crown with six
silver towers, only three of them visible. The representation of the mural crown
alludes to the authorities constituted in the municipality by the executive and
legislative powers.
The shield is supported to the right by three wheat
plants fructed and to its left by three grapevine plants fructed all proper.
These represent the primary crops established of the land by the Italian
colonists, who brought several seedlings of fruit trees when they settled the
place called Colônia Santa Maria.
Beneath the shield a white scroll is
inscribed the following inscription in wine color (garnet). "29 DE JANEIRO DE
1890" is the date of inauguration of the municipality.
Colors meaning
Silver / White represents pure light. It symbolizes peace, prosperity,
friendship, work, purity, and religious spirit.
Yellow is the image of
maturity of judgment. It symbolizes nobleness, magnitude, and resources.
Green denotes faith. It symbolizes hope, freedom, and strength of nature.
Black belongs to the domain of intelligence. It symbolizes prudence, vigor, and
honesty.
Wine / Garnet means sumptuousness and royalty. Its symbology is
identified with the virtues and qualities of the red color: audacity,
intrepidity, courage, and valiance.
The coat of arms was probably created
between the late 1940s and the mid-1950s, although there is no record of an
official adoption.
Some official documents from the 1950s, mostly from the
Municipal Chamber, feature the design that possibly originated the current coat
of arms. The minutes of the Municipal Chamber sessions do not include anything
related to the adoption of this "primitive coat of arms”. If this happened, it
was between 1948 and the first half of 1953, whose minutes book has been missing
for some years.
There is also no way to know when the design that is used
today was fixed. The design was initially single-colored, already alluding to
stone extraction, and including wheat leaves, grapevine leaves and grapes, and
the scroll with the date of inauguration of the municipality. The biggest
difference, however, with the current coat of arms resides in the representation
of the crown, which, in addition to being composed of five towers, had the
apparent superposition of stone blocks and an opening in the central tower.
