About the Flag

"Since our city was already 200 years old, the then Mayor Zeca Lopes, one of the greatest mayors in the history of Atalaia, opened a public competition in 1969 for the selection of the Anthem and Flag of Atalaia.

According to information from the book by the late writer Vandete Pacheco de Atalaia, our flag was designed by the dentistry student Benildo Gusmão from Verçosa; he is from Maceió.

The flag, in black, blue, and white, has the following meaning: Black – recalls slavery – the main fact of Atalaia's existence. Blue – recalls the sky. White – evokes the peace desired by all men.

The flag is rectangular and is divided as follows: The left half is a large navy blue rectangle, and the right half is subdivided into 5 smaller rectangles in alternating colors: white, black, white, black, and finally white. Above these small rectangles is the coat of arms designed by José de Alencar Monteiro, at the request of Mayor Zeca Lopes."
