The flag was adopted in 1971 as part of a flag contest. It was created by Tev. Robert Butcher who won a $50 Savings Bond for his creation. The township administration sent me a photo of the township flag.

New Springfield - Howard Bader, chairman of the Springfield Township trustees, Tuesday night presented awards to the winners of the township flag contest, sponsored by trustees.
The Rev. Robert Bucter received a $50 savings bond for his design, which will become the official township flag. By coincidence, Mrs. Joan Butcher, the pastor's wife, won a $25 savings bond as a second place winner. Her design theme depicted the pioneer farming community with a plow as a central figure
Alvin Denton placed third but as a trustee relinquished his $10 cash award. his design depicted churches, schools and homes in the township. Winners were chosen by a panel of judges.
This is the new Official flag of Springfield Township. It was selected from other entries and won a $50 Savings Bond for its creator, Rev. Robert Butcher of Petersburg Presbyterian Church. The sheaf of wheat symbolizes the agricultural heritage of the township; The triangle, the three villages-Petersburg, New Middletown and New Springfield. The white field symbolizes pure air, the green stripe, the fertile earth; the blue triangle, pur water. The township was created in 1803.
