The flag is apparently unofficial, being adopted in the mid 1970s. The red dragon represents the origin of its name, Peking, China; the dragon became the local high school mascot in 1981. The steamboat is a tribute to Pekin's heritage as an Illinois River port, and the marigold, a symbol native to Pekin was a favorite of the senator Everett Dirksen.
