Description of the flag

As a result of a chamber of commerce flag contest, Mayor Jeffery Schielke proclaimed the Batavia Community Flag (not the official flag) on April 3, 2023.

Below is part of a press release by the Batavia Chamber of Commerce:

Batavia Chamber of Commerce Announces Community Flag Contest Winner

The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is thrilled to announce that a winner has been chosen from the 107 designs submitted as part of the Batavia Community Flag Design Contest, which was held from November 1, 2022, to March 1, 2023.

A design submitted by Rachel Argo, a sophomore at Batavia Public High School, was chosen as the Batavia Community Flag. She was one of the 46 students under age 18 who submitted designs. According to Rachel’s description of the design’s significance, “it is meant to represent Batavia and its historical connection to industry along with its geography. In addition to the windmill, the blue stripes represent the Fox River, which shapes the geography of the town. Lastly the windmill also takes up the shape of the sun. Batavia’s relatively flat geography makes it a perfect place to spectate its gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.”

Marty Callahan, chairperson for the Flag Design Contest committee and member of the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA), confirmed that the quality and quantity of submissions was excellent, surprising people on the committee.

“There were so many good choices that it was a difficult decision,” said Marty. “The fact that five of the top 10 were student designs is a point of pride that the younger generation is invested in their community.”

According to Margaret Perreault, Batavia Chamber of Commerce president & CEO, the contest was conceived to help design a flag that can be proudly flown at residences as well as businesses to demonstrate commitment to and involvement in the community.

“Our town has an amazing way of depending on each other, supporting each other, and coming together for the common good and this competition has shown this,” enthused Margaret. “We’re also excited that the Batavia Chamber can partner with one of our valued members, FlagSource, to produce this flag so that everyone can show their town spirit by proudly flying a Batavia Community flag!”
