Punta Gorda (17,444 inhabitants in 2007) is located in Southwest Florida approximately 100 miles south of Tampa and 24 miles north of Fort Myers on beautiful Charlotte Harbor. Punta Gorda is the principal city of the Punta Gorda, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area which encompasses all of Charlotte County. As the county seat, it is also the only incorporated area within the County.
The City was founded in 1882 by Colonel Isaac Trabue on 30 acres of land on the southern shore of Charlotte Harbor and
was known as the Town of Trabue. In 1887, the name of the town was changed to Punta Gorda, Spanish for "Fat Point." The thriving little City of Punta Gorda was finally incorporated in 1900.
