Description of the flag

The California Highway Patrol, or CHP, has patrol jurisdiction over all California highways and also acts as the state police. Originally formed as a branch of the California Division of Motor Vehicles in 1929, the CHP was made its own department in 1947. In 1995, it merged with the smaller California State Police to become the dual-hatted agency we know today. The CHP is also responsible for providing security to state facilities, such as the California State Capitol, and guarding state officials. It is the largest state law enforcement agency in the United States, employing more than 11,000 people, as of 2009 data.
