About the Flag

It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain white field.

Coat of arms

Shield Gules with base wavy of Azure, Argent and Vert, crowned by a round embattled mural wall Or masoned Sable with port Sable, in chief a fess Argent covered with rose profiles Sable. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "AFIFE".
Meaning:
The fess with damascene ornamentation is representing the local stuccoworkers, working here until the middle of the 18th century. The wall is representing the numerous local fortresses in the past. The base wavy is representing the Atlantic (green) and the Afife River (blue), furthermore the importance of fishery and recently of tourism based on the location at the seaside.

Presentation of Afife

Afife Commune is one of the 27 communes of the Viana do Castelo municipality (q.v.); it had 1632 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 11.1 km².
