Federal Express Service Logistics Service BV of Rotterdam was the successor
of Algemeen Vrachtkantoor BV (Transportgroep Alvracht). This last company was
owned by the Unilever concern. Until 1989 the
transport section of the concern carried raw material for soap and margarine
production to factories in Germany and Holland. In 1989 Unilever was forced to
sell their transport activities by a commission installed by the Dutch
Government. The idea behind it was that Unilever should return to their basic
activities. The transport section was bought by Federal Express, a USA-based
courier service. They introduced the new name for the transport activities which
also included road transport.
