From the point of view of flag design, the bunch of various hardly identifiable
elements is generally a bad thing. We have enough of examples of such overburdened
flags on FOTW to mention any. But it seems that the designers of the Oost
Gelre flag found a way to satisfy the local bureaucracy (who no doubt required
all those numerous symbols) and yet to make an outstanding and distinctive design!
This may well be one for the record in "Good Flag, Bad Flag"
sequel of NAVA-member Ted Kay.

For the new municipality of Oost Gelre the High Council of Nobility
designed a coat of arms. This was based on the old arms of the former municipalities
of Groenlo and Lichtenvoorde. It consists of two elements, combining the
castle of Lichtenvoorde and the lion of Groenlo.
The municipal council and the local historical societies approved of
this design. It was granted by Royal resolution of 15 December 2005.
