Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 107.000; area: 350,00 km². Settlements: Emmen (seat), Barger-Compascuum, Emmer-Compascuum, Erica, Klazienaveen, Nieuw-Amsterdam, Nieuw-Dordrecht, Nieuw-Schoonebeek, Nieuw-Weerdinge, Roswinkel, Schoonebeek, Veenoord, Weiteveen, Zwartemeer.
Some time ago Antonio Martins produced a splendid gif based on a description I found on the web. The attached flag differs in a small detail from Antonio's gif: the COA is towards the fly. This is the old municipality flag and has been adopted as the new municipal flag.
Emmen consists of the old municipalities of Emmen and Schoonebeek.

Flag: "Length-height relationship: 3:2. The flag is white. At a quarter of the length, measured from the hoist, is the complete Coat of Arms of the municipality. On top and at the bottom the flag has a black stripe, width 1/5 of the flag-height, with ten adjacent green triangles, arranged over the full length of the flag, the points pointing inwards."

Nieuw-Weerdinge

The flag was designed by a village resident to commemorate its 150th anniversary, and adopted on 12.05.2023 (a one-year postponement due to COVID-19 restrictions). The flag's colors symbolize history. The brown area represents the historic peatland. After peat extraction, the peat became farmland. This is represented in green. The four crosses represent the four Kruisdiepen canals that intersect the Weerdingerkanaal (blue stripe). The two statues (a peat worker and a farmer) stand at the entrance and exit of the village, respectively. These were placed there in 1972, on the occasion of the village's centennial.

Schoonebeek [former municipality]

Schoonebeek is now part of the municipality of Emmen (Drenthe, the Netherlands); it was important because oil was found there.
The flag was adopted 24 September 1954 by the municipal council. It was derived from the municipal Coat of Arms. The eagle was derived from the shield of the lordship Coevorden, to which this municipality formerly belonged. The blue stripe refers to the 'Schoonebeker Diep' (the canal splitting the municipality in two). Source: Sierksma's Vlaggenboek (1962) & Gemeentewapens (1968).
