The coat of arms was created by Prof. Gelasio Márquez Pérez and Sixto Garcia Pacheco, being submitted to the council for consideration as they felt it was necessary, and painted for the first time by the American painter named William H. Howe in 1980; this information was found in a document in which the Municipal Chronicler proposed making the coat of arms official. The shield is divided into four quadrants. The upper-left quadrant depicts the Mixquetla Hill in the background. In its center, the Huastec Governess named Tomiyahu is depicted, dressed in a traditional way and holding a dagger. The upper-right section depicts the San Juan Bautista Church and Municipal Building, remembering the 19th and 20th centuries. The lower-left section depicts a metal bridge (in front) and a concrete bridge (in the background), the bridges over the Amajac River. The lower-right quadrant depicts, from left to right: a cob of corn as the basic aliment of the people, three oranges on a branch for its citrus production, a cow head for cattle-raising, and fruits on a branch existing since the start. In most versions, a "T" shape is found in the center indicating the confluence of the Moctezuma and Amajac rivers; in its center, a sun is depicted next to Náhuatl symbols for atl (water currents). In some versions, at the top of the border is a sword and a branch indicating peace and war; in others, a sword is depicted on the left and a cane. Also, the shape of the shield and order of the quadrants can differ.
