Persons with and Intellectual Disability was founded in 1986, using the
former name of the International Association for Persons with Mental
Handicap.
57 nations are affiliated with the federation. The logo in the
center of the white flag is a world map surrounded by a band with the name
of the Federation, which embraces the world.

A second former flag was also seen, featuring the second logo variant
(in blue as well), in use since 1999. The current flag is the current logo over a white horizontal
background. The Virtus is the emblem of World Intellectual Impairment
Sport. It represents how both the federation and the athletes join
forces in sport for people with intellectual impairments. The
rebranding process was carried out by the company Blue Strawberry
Elephant.
