From Filcher (1984):

In the feudal set up of the Princely States of India there were three different kinds of vassal or dependent states with the relations to the proper Princely States:
1. Tikhana (literally - household), a grant of land, the revenue of which belonged to the grantee, but not the land itself.
2. Jagir (from Persian - holding land) - grant of land and villages.
3. Zamindar (land holder) responsible for collecting and paying to the superior government the taxes on land under his jurisdiction.
Those subservient states were so numerous I don't think anybody ever counted them all. Here, I will give examples of their flags (less known even than those of the Princely States). Images, thanks to Henry Soszynski.
