Overview

Jánosháza is a town in Celldömölk district of Vas county, situated in eastern part of the county.
The area around the settlement has been inhabited for thousands of years. Jánosháza has been owned by several noble families over the centuries. The settlement and its countryside came into the hands of the Garays at the beginning of the 15th century. The first written mention of the village's name also dates back to this time, a document mentions it as "Janushaza". The first written mention of the Jánosháza castle dates back to 1510.
In the second half of the 18th century - thanks to the flourishing trade - a large Jewish population appeared in Jánosháza, who also built a synagogue and maintained their own school. By the end of the century, the settlement had become a significant market place. In the 19th century, Jánosháza was also the district seat, but it could not maintain its central role, so it was annexed to the Kiscelli district.
Jánosháza was granted town status on 15 July 2013.
