Vaja is a town in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary.
It was first mentioned in 1272 during the grant of land by King Béla IV, when the name was used in the forms Woya and Waya.
In 1312, the settlement was already mentioned as the estate of the Vay family. Around 1370, the owner was the Bishop of Várad, László Vay.
Vaja Castle was once a large fortress, where the Peace of Szatmár was negotiated with Ferenc Rákóczi.
At the end of the 1700s, the settlement had 650 inhabitants. At the end of 1939, 524 Calvinist Vajais from the village moved to Magyarbóly in Baranya County.
The Vay family remained the owners of the settlement until the 1940s.
Vaja has been a city since 01 July 2009.

The flag consists of two equal horizontal bands of red and blue. The coat of arms is placed in the middle of the flag, with the coat of arms
occupying equal proportions in the red and blue fields of the flag. Ratio is 2:3.
The original adoption date is unknown for me, probably it was adopted in early 1990’s. However, the current coat of arms adopted after 2009.
The current legislation is the Municipal Decree No. 12/2024. (X. 9.) adopted on 09 October 2024:

I haven’t found any pictures on flag, so my flag image based on description of the flag in the legislation.

The shield is divided into several parts. The first quarter is blue, on which a deer runs, with golden antlers protruding from its head,
its mouth pierced by an arrow, and above it a crescent moon and a star shine. The second quarter is red and two plowshares are depicted on it.
Below them is a silver horizontal band, on which a lily and a red rose head are visible. The lower part is green, with a cross, a chalice and
a double cross depicted on it. In the middle, on the shield, a castle is visible. The shield is covered by a baronial crown. At the bottom, two years: 1836 and 2009,
and the name of the town are visible on a yellow ribbon.
This coat of arms was adopted after 2009.
