Overview

Sülysáp is a town in Nagykáta district of Pest County, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) east of Budapest.
Süly is a settlement from the árpád era. Its name was mentioned in documents as early as 1259 as Sul. After the Tatar invasion, King Béla IV gave it to the Dominican nuns of Nyúlsziget in 1259, and the donation was confirmed by the Pope in 1276.
Sáp is also a settlement from the árpád era. Its name was first mentioned in a document as Saap in 1279. The settlement was the property of János Sápi, and it was recorded as his property in 1306. Oszlár, also a now-defunct settlement, was located next to Sáp. The name Oszlár was first mentioned in a document in 1252 after the Tatar invasion as Ozlar.
Oszlár is the Turkish name of an Alan people, which can thus be classified as one of our tribal place names. The Oszlars may have joined the Hungarians with the Kabars during the Conquest. In 1312, the estate belonged to the nuns of Nyúlsziget, and was probably depopulated during the Turkish period.
In 1950 two villages, Tápiósáp and Tápiósüly, amalgamated, but they separated in 1954. In 1970 they combined again to form modern Sülysáp.
Sülysáp received town status on 15 July 2013.

The Flag

The flag consists of two horizontal stripes: the upper part is blue, the lower part is white. The coat of arms is placed in the middle of the flag, and the wavy line of the coat of arms symbolizing Tápió is placed where the two colors meet. The name the town is written over the shield with golden letters. The ratio is 1:2.
The flag was adopted by Municipal Decree No. 15/1997. (IX. 27.) on 27 September 1997.
