Overview

örkény is a small town in Dabas district of Pest county, located from 50 km (31 mi) south of Budapest.
The mediaeval village was formed beside the ancient Pest-Constantinople highway. örkény appeared in the royal charters in the 15th century under the name Ewrkyn or Ewrken (the origin of the name is uncertain).
The village was destroyed in the early days of the Ottoman rule, and remained deserted until the 18th century because of the constant wars and looting armies. In the 20th century örkény was transformed by the rapid economic development, the mechanization of the agriculture and the slow urbanization.
örkény became a town in 2005.

The Coat of Arms

image by Zoltan Horvath, 10 January 2025

The coat of arms is divided horizontally. The green upper part shows a blue coulter, a ploughshare and a yellow ear of corn, referring to crop production and farming. Three yellow ears of corn are depicted above the shield. On the lower blue part, on a green double mound, stands a two-tailed lion holding an apple (ball) and a sword. The lion refers to the person of Count Antal Grassalkovich and the later owner István Pálóczi-Horváth. This symbol appears in the coats of arms of both families. The double mound (in which the lion stands and unites the mounds as a unit) symbolizes the historical territorial and population duality of örkény. The mound is green. The lion is brown, dark brown, the tip of the tail and the shaded part of its paws are black. The sword and the ball is gold.
The coat of arms was adopted by the same Municipal Decree in 1994.
