Egyek is a large village in Balmazújváros district of Hajdú-Bihar county, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary.
The area that rises out of the Tisza floodplain was inhabited in prehistoric times. The Greek historian Priskos also reports on the village.
It appeared in written sources relatively late (1322).
The village was destroyed during the Tatar invasion and was only resettled in the 13th century.
After the Tatar invasion, it was owned by the Egyek family, a middle-class landowner who named themselves after the village - there is data on the Egyek family until 1367.
Later, the village came into the possession of various families.
In the second half of the 16th century, the majority of the population converted to the Reformed faith. The village was repopulated with Roman Catholics at the end of the 18th century.
The village belonged to Szabolcs County for a long time, and then to Hajdú County, which was formed in 1876.
