Presentation of Torvizcón

The municipality of Torvizcón (710 inhabitants in 2014; 5,140 ha; municipal website) is located 78 km south of Granada.
Torvizcón, according to some historians, was established by the Romans as Turidianum. A more popular etymology of the name of the village is related to torvisco, the flax-leaved daphne (Daphne gnidium L.), a Mediterranean shrub locally known to heal eye ache. During the Muslim period, the village thrived after the set up of wells and irrigation system. Torvizcón was famous for its silk and raisins.

Symbols of Torvizcón

The flag of Torvizcón, adopted on 18 June 2013 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 20 June 2013 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, is prescribed by a Decree adopted on 1 July 2013 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 16 July 2013 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 137, p. 28. (text).
The flag is described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular panel, in proportions 2:3 (from hoist to fly), vertically divided into three vertical stripes of equal length. The stripe at hoist, green, the central, yellow, and the stripe at fly, blue. In the center, the municipal coat of arms.

The flag (photo) was inaugurated on 18 January 2014 [Granada Digital, 18 January 2014].

The coat of arms of Torvizcón is prescribed by Decree No. 22, adopted on 18 February 1992 by the Government of Andalusia and published on 7 April 1992 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 29, pp. 1,776-1,777 (text). Originally approved on 21 June 1990 by the Municipal Council, the arms were amended on 14 June 1991 by the Royal Academy of History, the final design being eventually approved on 11 November 1991 by the Municipal Council. This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The coat of arms is described as follows:

Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Argent a lion purpure crowned, 2. Per fess, 1. Gules a tower argent, 2. Azure a caldron argent in base a flower of almond tree of the same. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History validated the proposed arms, provided minor modifications are implemented. The field of the first quarter, representing the arms of the Silva, Counts of Cifuentes and lords of Torvizcón, should be argent. The caldron placed on a field azure should not be sable, for the sake of chromatic contrast. The adequate arrangement of the arms of Silva is a vertical quarter and not an horizontal one as proposed.
