Meaning:
The settlement was known as Newenkirchen in 1274. It had been seat of a commissionaire in service of the Holy Roman Empire. It was called a market town in 1357 and a city in 1459. The city rights had been granted by the Reeves of Plauen around 1350, proven since 1360. It was acquired in 1357 by the Margraves of Meißen, in 1547 by the Reeves of Plauen and finally in 1569 by the Electors of Sachsen. In 1624 the city bought the high level cognisance. The city became the most important site of the production of musical instruments all over Germany since 1800. The lion is that one of the reeves and was first depicted on a local seal from the 15th century. As a distinguishing mark the lion was painted on a blue shield with golden orle. Blue and golden had been also the traditional colours of the city.
