Shield Azure, issuant from base an embattled wall Or, masoned Sable with two open ports having a portcullis Sable each. The wall is crowned by two embattled towers Or roofed Gules. Between both ports is an inescutcheon Azure, charged with a lion rampant Or, armed and tongued Gules, surrounded by six billets Or.
Meaning:
The arms are based on the seals used from 1536 until the 19th century. The small shield displays the arms of the Counts of Nassau, who ruled the city for a long time, and who granted city rights in 1287. The oldest seals, known since the late 13th century and used until the 16th century, only displayed the arms of Nassau. Blue and orange are the colours of Nassau.
The arms were approved in 1908, but had been considered as quasi arms since the 17th century.
