Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) field is a black, rampant, sinister facing lion, armed and tongued red. He is holding a silver (=white) inescutcheon, which contains nine red balls ordered 4:3:2.
Meaning:
According to source city rights had been granted in 1352. The arms show the small shield of the lords of Schönforst, who were appointed vassals over Monschau in 1354. When the city became a possession of the dukes of Jülich in 1435, their lion was added.
The arms are known from seals since around 1600.
