The Town of Caledon (57,050 inhabitants in 2006) is one of the three municipalities forming the Regional Municipality of Peel, in the Greater Toronto Area. Established on 1 January 1974 by the amalgamation of the Townships of Albion, Caledon and the nothern part of Chinguacousy, the new town was given the name of Caledon following a public referendum held in 1973. The three townships had been settled in 1820, as part of the County of Peel.1
The town is a mix of urban, agricultural and landscaped areas, seemingly highly valued by the richest Torontonians. In March 2008, Caledon was elected the safest of the 100 biggest town and regions of Canada by "Maclean's". In 2003, Caledon was co-recipient of the "Greenest Town in Ontario" award.2
The flag of Caledon is yellow with the municipal emblem in black. Partially visible in the background of a photography of the Town Council, together with the flags of Ontario and Canada, the flag can be fully seen in a photography taken during the "Walk of Fame" ceremony.3
The emblem of the town, shown on most pages of the municipal website, can be seen in more details on the brochure of the 2008 Gulf Tournament. It features stylized elements such as a bridge (?), a maple leaf, three other leaves, a wheat spike and a cog wheel. "TOWN OF CALEDON" is written under the emblem.4
The front page of the municipal website (31 July 2008) announced that Caledon native Cameron Sylvester would compete at Beijing 2008 Olympic Summer Games and will bring there a Caledon flag signed by the citizens wishing to support it.5
